Four is a door.

If we want to pull on a little ancient Hebrew, the 4th letter of their alphabet is Dalet, with the literal meaning of door or opening. (Isn’t it great that letters can have numbers and have their own meaning!?!) And we can think of such things as a rectangle with 4 sides and 4 angles perhaps being a door. Or we can think of 4 seasons, 4 cardinal directions, even the 4 corners of the earth (not sure how that works exactly unless the world is flat…).

But what does a door represent? A door is the entranceway, the threshold of going from one place to another. In Chronicles of Narnia, the wardrobe door took you to another world. In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I am the door,” meaning, I’m the means, the entryway from earth to heaven, from man to God, from sin to grace. (I John 10:9)

The door to school also represents change. Each day you walk through it is the potential to be changed, to become more of who you are, to learn something that will impact your life. The option is always there, the action is to just take one step and be open to more.
